There is no greater feeling than being part of a community that helps one another. When we do good, we feel good. And with the holiday season upon us, now is a great time for giving. Since we first opened our doors in 1928, the East Bay Community Foundation has made it our mission to connect the passions of donors with nonprofits that are solving the needs of the community. We’ve put together a list of a few ways to make the most of your year-end giving. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any assistance!
1. Consider your income
Take time to understand your tax liability for the year. Did your unearned income increase? Did you sell any appreciated assets? Do you have appreciated assets? Gifting appreciated assets to a charity has significant tax benefits, most notably you will be able to deduct the fair market value of the asset and avoid paying capital gains tax.
2. Give early and complete your gift by December 31st
A contribution made by check to your fund at EBCF is complete when mailed (postmarked), even if not cashed until the following year. Gifts by credit card are complete when your credit card account is charged. Gifts of stock and real estate may be more complex; don’t wait until late December to make these types of gifts as it may be too late to make the necessary arrangements.
3. Don’t know which organizations you’d like to support? Call the EBCF team for help!
If you would like strategic advice about how or which organizations to support, one of our team members can meet with you or chat by phone to explore your options and identify organizations that are qualified to receive a grant from your fund. And remember, when you make a contribution to your fund at EBCF, that gift is immediately tax deductible for that calendar year.
4. Explore employer gift matching programs
Many companies offer gift matching programs that can increase—even double—the impact of your gift to your fund at EBCF. Your Human Resource team should be able to assist.
5. Create a giving plan
Our team has extensive knowledge of the local nonprofit community and the broad charitable needs of our region. We can help you create a giving plan to help you think strategically about how you give and to what organizations. This ensures that your donations make the greatest impact on the causes you care about while maximizing tax advantages. Please reach out to Christine Lim at firstname.lastname@example.org.
6. Consider the East Bay Community Foundation
In addition, consider making a general support contribution to EBCF. With this type of contribution, EBCF makes grants based on current needs and priorities of the local East Bay region, and always with an eye towards strengthening the voice and sustainability of our community organizations. You can rest assured that your dollar is being leveraged to make the greatest impact in the East Bay.
