Our Fourth Consecutive Four-Star Rating

Charity Navigator

The East Bay Community Foundation is proud to receive our fourth consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the biggest of the charity-rating groups. Charity Navigator examines and rates about 5,500 charitable organizations, largely on financial criteria.

Its rating system has been noted and praised by Forbes magazine, BusinessWeek magazine, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, PC magazine, Time magazine, Esquire magazine, Mother Jones magazine, Slate, and PCWorld.com, among others.

Says Charity Navigator President & CEO Ken Berger: “We are proud to announce the East Bay Community Foundation has earned our fourth consecutive 4-star rating for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances. Only 8% of the charities we rate have received at least 4 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating the East Bay Community Foundation consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America. This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator differentiates East Bay Community Foundation from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”

Charity Navigator uses financial information from IRS Forms 990 to analyze an organization’s performance in seven categories that cover organizational efficiency, organizational capacity, and overall financial health. Then they compare scores among organizations to assign a rating of one to four stars. Four stars, the highest rating, is defined as “Exceptional…Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause.”
